Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television included two episodes as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. However, her parents did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the effects stress would be able to have on their daughter. Perry, who was too shy to be a part of the theater in her school, began to perform in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new acquaintances. Perry moved to New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then brought Perry her back home California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. Perry starred with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In the year 2015, she was alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. That same year she was cast as a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's. She was cast in the role through an open audition despite having a connection to the character.
